BT&F: #4 North Central slips past #5 host Lawrence Central, 68-64

LAWRENCE – Fourth-ranked North Central (Indianapolis) utilized a huge finish from Filimon Adhanom late in the Panthers’ season-opening boys track & field meet March 24 to squeak past No. 5 host Lawrence Central, 68-64.

The outcome of the meet turned in the next-to-last event, the 3200-meter run. An outstanding kick down the stretch allowed Adhanom to overtake LC’s Ross Pereira. The four-point swing was the difference as the teams would have tied at 66.

North Central won nine of the 16 events, including a 1-2-3 finish in the shot put led by Anthony Bradley’s 54’ 11” and a double win from Justin Boone (:41.31 in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, 21’ 04” in the long jump). The Panthers are looking for their fourth state title and first since 1992.

Futsum Zeinasellassie, the defending state champion in the 3200, was a winner in the 1600 (4:37.0) and placed second in the 3200 (1:59.0) for coach Rick Stover’s Panthers. Other marquee wins for North Central came in the 100, where John Broaden nipped teammate Khyran Shank by just .05 with a 10.65, and the 200, where Shank returned the favor with a :21.65 to down LC’s runner-up Tyrenzzie Burgess (:21.70) and Broaden (:21.77).

Lawrence Central coach Mike Holman was pleased with his team’s effort despite the narrow loss, citing the efforts of Burgess, Jeron Brown (a :50.01 in winning the 400), and the Bears’ 4×400-meter relay unit in addition to Pereira’s personal-best 9:56 in the 3200.

LC is a two-time state champ, the last crown coming in 2005.
